Course Description

This course explores the role of race and class in the protection, perception and experience of political power. It draws upon 1) theories of subordination and citizenship, 2) U.S. constitutional protections of “equal” citizenship and 3) the successes and challenges of the Occupy Wallstreet and Black Lives Matter movements. Using these as a framework, it invites students to consider how to address the gaps between theory, law, and practice for those who are disadvantaged by race and/or class.
