Course Description

This class will explore the topic of traditionally taboo trades (e.g. prostitution, marijuana, organ sales, and paying college athletes) through the production of a podcast with a guest scholar, lawyer, or regulator. Students will read relevant background work and develop questions and content for the podcast. Students will work in teams to “guest produce" each episode and will take the lead in selecting questions and materials, and help conduct the on-air interviews. (If any student doesn’t want to be on air then they can produce the episode behind the scenes instead, though most enjoy podcasting once they’ve tried it.) After each podcast, students will break down the episode – which answers were satisfying, which weren’t, which questions are still open?

Exam Information

Final Type (if any): None

Description: None

Written Work Product

Students will be responsible for submitting a final paper reflecting on and evaluating the guests and topics covered during the semester. The final paper will be due via EXPO by noon on December 20th (the day before the last day of the finals period). You do not have to address every topic and speaker covered in the course, but papers should seek to draw out common themes across the various topics covered, rather than address a single topic or speaker. Length: 2500 words maximum. That's about five single-spaced or ten double-spaced pages. You do not need to do any outside research. I'm looking for your thoughts and reactions on the topics/papers/speakers we discussed. In that sense, think of it more like a take home exam or long reaction paper, rather than a "research paper."

Other Work

Students will be responsible for producing a podcast episode and weekly development of guest questions based on readings.
