The University of Virginia School of Law is proud to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program. The Yellow Ribbon Program is part of the provisions of the Chapter 33/Post 9/11 GI Bill® Benefit program, which provides education benefits to military veterans who have served on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.
Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Therefore, veterans may be eligible if:
- they served an aggregate period of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
- they were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001;
- they are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran's service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
Active-duty military personnel are not eligible for Yellow Ribbon.
The process for applying for Yellow Ribbon benefits for is:
- Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs and obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for Post-9/11 education benefits. The certificate will indicate both your eligibility for benefits and your level of benefits earned. If you are deemed to be 100 percent eligible for Post-9/11 benefits, your certificate will also indicate that you are eligible for Yellow Ribbon benefits.
- You must then submit your Certificate of Eligibility to the Veterans Benefits Administrator in the Office of the University Registrar, along with UVA’s “Military Educational Benefits Request (MEBR)" form, available at www.virginia.edu/registrar/veterans.html. A new “Military Educational Benefits Request (MEBR)” form is required for each academic semester.
