Course Description

This short course will focus on selected topics that pose contentious policy challenges for law enforcement, including crafting and implementing effective crime control strategies, implementing investigative practices that are both fair and useful, establishing rules to govern investigations of political activity, and calibrating use of force policies to maximize both officer and civilian safety. Some of the broad questions that each unit will address are as follows: (1) Crime control strategies; (2) Investigative practices and limiting the risk of wrongful conviction; (3) Investigations with 1st Amendment implications (including investigating political activities); and (4) Use of force.

Written Work Product

Grading will be based upon class participation (30%), policy drafting and negotiation assignments (30%), and a final paper (40%). The final paper will be due via EXPO no later than noon on February 15, 2024.

Prerequisites: (Constitutional Law (6001)) AND (Criminal Adjudication (7018) OR Criminal Investigation (7019) OR Criminal Procedure Survey (7009)) AND (Civil Procedure (6000)) Criminal Law and Torts are recommended, but not required. Concurrencies: None
