Course Description

This seminar will cover -- in some depth -- issues raised by the most recent Supreme Court First Amendment religious freedom cases and, where applicable, any lower court cases seeking to apply them. Topics will include religious discrimination, school prayer, religious exemptions, private religious speech, religious speech in the public square, and funding of religious schools. The seminar will survey the First Amendment doctrines and history necessary to address these issues.

The course work in the seminar will include regular (short) responses to weekly readings and 3 short papers over the course of the semester (all due directly to instructor, not via EXPO).
