Course Description

This is the first semester of a yearlong seminar designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. The theme for this section is "Drive to Derive." This course examines Formula One and NASCAR from a lawyer’s, though not necessarily a legal, perspective. Can we derive a prototypical business structure from motorsports, and how does that model differ from other sports and businesses? What can we infer from the similarities and differences between the roles and rules of a sanctioning body (like the FIA or NASCAR) and the agencies of the federal government? Can we concoct an ideal set of the rules for a board game or card game about car racing? Can we imagine an ideal combination of race formats and scoring rules that give teams and tracks the optimal incentives to provide a gripping spectacle for spectators but a relatively safe experience for the drivers?
