Courtenay Schwartz has served as legal and policy director for the Richmond-based Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance since 2020. In that role, she leads the agency’s legal program, advises survivors of sexual and domestic violence, and drafts position statements and proposed legislation, among other duties. She teaches Domestic Violence and the Law at the Law School.

Since 2023, Schwartz has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Richmond School of Law, where she teaches a seminar on domestic violence law, and in 2025 she joined the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Access to Justice Commission’s subcommittee on domestic violence.

From 2017-19, Schwartz worked as a client attorney for the Greater Richmond Regional Collaborative to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, advising clients on a range of legal matters related to domestic and sexual violence. Prior to that, she served as an appeals agent with the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services and at the Richmond Legal Development Center.

Schwartz graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Virginia in 2007 and received a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2012.
