From mass hunger strikes and work stoppages behind bars, to wider reform movements, this roundtable discussion will center on the politics of punishment in the United States. Panelists will include Bernard E. Harcourt, Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law and Professor of Political Science, Columbia Law School; Heather Ann Thompson, professor of history and professor of Afroamerican and African Studies, University of Michigan, and author of “Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy,” winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in History and Bancroft Prize; Vesla Mae Weaver, Bloomberg Distinguished Associate Professor of Political Science and Sociology, Johns Hopkins University, and a 2016-17 Andrew Carnegie Fellow; and moderator Christopher Berk, DeOlazarra Fellow in Political Philosophy, Policy & Law, University of Virginia.
