Prior to her 2023 confirmation, Reyes worked in private practice and focused her pro bono work on representing asylum seekers and refugee organizations. After graduating from Harvard Law School, Reyes clerked for the U.S. Judge Amalya Kearse of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Food will be provided.

Join the Law, Innovation, Security, and Technology (LIST) Society to hear from a panel of practitioners about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Chatrie v. United States. LIST will be joined by Adam Unikowsky, who argued for Chatrie, and Trisha Anderson, former deputy general counsel for the FBI. Professor Aditya Bamzai will moderate.

Join Advocates for Life for a lunch-and-learn with Carolyn McDonnell, litigation counsel at Americans United for Life. McDonnell will share about her behind-the-scenes policy work and briefing for members of Congress and the administration.

1Ls who haven’t yet met with the Public Service Center, but are interested in a summer position in public service, can hear from the PSC about how to get up to speed on the basics of a 1L summer public service job search while pursuing a 2L summer position in private practice. This event is geared primarily for those 1Ls who intend to submit applications during the fall semester for 1L summer positions in public service, such as with high-profile national nonprofits, prominent federal agencies and offices and other competitive early-moving programs. Biweekly dinner meetings open to the Law School bring in speakers from around the school and UVA community to discuss topics including community, acceptance and faith in the legal profession and at the Law School.

Join the Mortimer Caplin Public Service Center for the final installment in Career Development’s “Real Deal” panel series. Alumni working for federal agencies will discuss their work, career paths and what it is like to represent the federal government. Food provided with RSVP through Events tab in Symplicity by Oct. 6.

Ben Block ’01, a Covington & Burling partner, will speak about his experience in sports law. Block is a nationally recognized sports lawyer with first-chair trial and appellate experience. On behalf of both sports- and non-sports clients, he often handles cases involving high-stakes requests for preliminary injunctive relief. Block has represented both the NFL and the American Athletic Conference on a variety of matters, from antitrust litigation to collective bargaining agreements.

Professor Mila Versteeg will deliver the chair lecture “A Hazardous Experiment: Can a New Constitution Fix a Country?”

James Madison warned that a second constitutional convention would be a “hazardous experiment.” Around the world, however, this experiment is remarkably common: more than 800 national constitutions have been adopted since 1789. This lecture will use global data and case-study research to show how and why new constitutions often fail to solve the problems that prompted their adoption and might even make things worse. Box lunches will be available at 11:45 a.m.

Join ALF for a panel with Axinn and hear about what life is like at the firm. The event will consist of a panel-led discussion with Axinn attorneys to get a sense of what the day-to-day is like at a boutique antitrust firm. Food will be provided.

Lambda Law Alliance welcomes students to meet practicing attorneys representing private law firms from around the country. Learn about transactional, litigation and regulatory practices at our expert panels, and network with lawyers at the reception. Events will take place in Brown Hall and Caplin Pavilion.

Representatives from the Virginia Office of the Attorney General will be on hand to speak with interested students about the work their office does and summer internship/Honors Fellowship opportunities.

This will be an informal opportunity for students to enjoy coffee and donuts, play board games and chat with law librarians.

The Miller Center’s Health Care Policy Project will host a panel to examine which strategies are most likely to strengthen the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, what a reconstituted agency may look like, why leadership matters and how trust and confidence can be rebuilt. Professor Margaret Foster Riley will moderate.

This will be an information and Q&A session about study abroad and the international exchange programs being offered in the 2027-28 academic year. Professor Ruth Mason, chair of the International Relations Committee, and Senior Assistant Dean Jason Dugas ’01 of the Student Records Office will be leading the information session, and current and previous exchange students will attend to answer questions. Students interested in studying abroad during their 3L year should attend. Snacks will be provided. 

Daniel Rauch is an assistant professor at the University of Maryland King Carey School of Law. His research focuses on the laws governing political speech and how they work in a digital democracy. A reception will follow.
