Virginia Bruner is a partner at Williams Mullen, where she works on internal investigations and compliance matters and manages complex criminal and civil litigation in federal court. She teaches the short course Sex Trafficking at the Law School.
Prior to joining Williams Mullen, Bruner served several years in the U.S. Department of Justice, including as an assistant special counsel in the investigation of classified materials found in the home and office of President Joe Biden. She also spent nearly seven years as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, with a focus on prosecuting human trafficking, white-collar crimes and fraud related to government programs. Additionally, Bruner worked at international law firms in Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, and served as a law clerk to U.S. Judge Peter J. Messitte of the District of Maryland.
Before going to law school, Bruner served as a counterterrorism analyst for the CIA.
Bruner earned her J.D. in 2011 from the University of Virginia School of Law, where she was on the editorial board of the Virginia Law Review. She earned her B.A. from New York University.
Bruner serves on the board of directors of Girls on the Run for Greater Richmond, a nonprofit that works to empower girls in grades 3-8 to be healthy and confident using lessons that integrate running and movement.
