The recent special issue of The Political Librarian is viewed as a “Love Letter to Libraries in Our Darkest Hour” by guest editors Allison Jennings-Roche and Paul T. Jaeger. The issue is a response to the 2024 election and current attacks on libraries, archives, museums, and access to information. It is a call to action, encouraging librarians that “[r]ather than succumbing to helplessness, the response is to do something, take a step, find your work, and commit to it.” The issue brings together twenty-one articles written by academics, advocates, educators, administrators, and librarians – including librarians on the front lines like Carrie Price, who was recently fired from her position as a biomedical librarian at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The articles offer sobering insights into how we got here and what might happen if we don’t respond effectively. They also offer practical, tangible actions we can take to ensure libraries survive. And, most importantly, they offer inspiration and hope.
