Externships Program

Students in D.C. Program

Eligibility

First-year and LL.M. students are not eligible for externships. Transfer students are not eligible for full-time externships.

A student may participate in a full-time externship only in their fourth, fifth, or sixth semester of law school. 

No student may do more than one full-time externship, and no student may do more than two part-time or one full-time and one part-time externships. No student may do more than one externship per semester.

Application Deadlines for the 2021-22 Academic Year

Applications should be submitted to the Director of Externships, Professor Sprightley Ryan at externships@law.virginia.edu

FULL-TIME EXTERNSHIP DEADLINE
Oct. 15, 2021 for the spring 2022 semester (includes UVA Law in DC)
Mar. 15, 2022 for the fall 2022 semester (includes UVA Law in DC)

PART-TIME EXTERNSHIP DEADLINE
Nov. 15, 2021 for the spring 2022 semester
April 15, 2022 for the fall 2022 semester

J-TERM EXTERNSHIP DEADLINE
Nov. 15, 2021 for the 2022 January term

Students should prepare for applying two months in advance in order to find placements and/or line up a research topic and reading list. Full-time externships, other than UVA Law in DC externships, also require a faculty advisor.
